A masterpiece on wheels: Mercedes-Maybach S680 inspired by a land yacht

Mercedes-Maybach S680 Bespoke Car Inspired by a Land Yacht.

Mercedes-Maybach has unveiled a unique S-Class built for a special order for a customer, embodying the luxury of a yacht on wheels: the Mercedes-Maybach S680.

Mercedes wanted its S680 to resemble a racing yacht dating back to 1939, a move that would certainly raise the bar for any yacht club, one that is owned by the few.

You read that right, Mercedes wanted this custom S-Class to pay homage to a very special source of inspiration in honor of the 150th anniversary of Flensburg-based silversmiths Robbe & Berking.

Mercedes Maybach S680 Design

  • The new Mercedes-Maybach S680 luxury sedan is inspired by an ultra-luxury yacht, and the design takes the form of a two-tone body: the background is created in Nautical Blue Metallic, while the high seas are suggested by a touch of Patagonia Red.

  • The small striped line, in metallic white opalite, is what naturally separates the high seas.

  • The Mercedes-Maybach S680 is covered in Maybach Manufaktur 's exclusive Nappa leather (Crystal White), the roof lining, door panels, and storage compartment are all heavily quilted with diamonds, and Orion Grey stitching provides just enough to keep things interesting.

Wood is an integral part of the Mercedes S680 design

  • A generous amount of wood paneling is a must for any nautical tribute, and this Maybach delivers on that front.

  • The interior is dominated by carefully crafted walnut inserts that mimic the deck of a ship, with metal strips for added realism.

  • Seasickness shouldn't be a problem either, as the chairs are generously padded with diamonds and upholstered in crystal white nappa leather.

  • The side sills are illuminated with Maybach lettering in case you forget which brand of land yacht you are operating.

Mercedes Maybach S680 Engine

The Mercedes-Maybach S680 comes with a 6.0-liter twin-turbo V12 engine under the hood that produces 900 Nm (664 lb-ft) of torque and 603 hp (450 kW / 612 PS).

The Maybach S-Class is offered in the top-of-the-line S680 trim as well as the China-only S480 with a six-cylinder engine and the S580 with a twin-turbo V8.

Finally, there's the S580e, which has a six-cylinder engine and a plug-in hybrid system.

Mercedes Maybach S680 price

Maybach has withheld information about the price of the unique S680 as well as the identity of its owner, who must be as passionate about sailing as he is about driving luxury cars.

History of the yacht that inspired the S680

The 21.48-metre (70.47 ft) Sphinx was built by the Abeking & Rasmussen shipyard in 1939.

It has undergone several changes of ownership over the years, but since 2005, it has been restored to its former glory.

One of its current owners, Oliver Berking, founded the Flensburg-based yacht shipyard Robbe & Berking Classics, which works with Maybach.
