The expanded Chinese factory will be able to produce two million electric cars every year.
According to reports, Tesla has started up "Phase 3" development at its Shanghai, China Gigafactory, expanding the facility to accommodate the manufacturing of the anticipated $25,000 electric vehicle.
Local media report that Tesla initially began preparations for Phase 3 in 2021 but suspended work on expanding the site in 2022.
- Last April, the company began work on a new energy storage facility in Shanghai, which will have an annual production of 40 gigawatts per hour and begin production in the second quarter of 2024.
The Giga Shanghai site currently produces Model 3 and Model Y, with an annual production capacity of 1.1 million vehicles.
