Learn about the importance of warming up your car engine in the winter

The German Technical Inspection Authority recommends that the car engine temperature be raised for a sufficient period before starting to drive during the winter season, in order to avoid harm to car engines.

The authority explained that low temperatures could cause an increase in the viscosity of the oil, whether in the engine or transmission.

This, in turn, leads to insufficient oil protection for all parts of the engine, which causes the mechanical parts of the engine and transmission to wear when pressing hard on the accelerator pedal.

This can cause significant damage to the engine when moving metal parts come into contact without the protective oil layers. Therefore, the vehicle may not be driven until all fluids have reached operating temperature.

German experts have indicated that there is no general rule about how long it takes to warm up the engine, which may vary depending on the external temperatures, and the interval between the last time the engine was started, and it varies from one car to another as well.

Because fluids are colder in the winter than in the summer, they will take longer to reach operating temperature. But as usual, all fluids in the car should reach their optimal operating temperature after at least 10 to 15 minutes of driving.

There are some models of cars that display data about the temperature of oil and water. However, there are other cars that cannot be known, and the driver does not know them. Here, time must be adhered to in order to ensure that the car warms up, and it is preferable to walk long distances with caution rather than short distances quickly.
