2025 Honda Civic Hybrid Is More Powerful and More Efficient, But A Little More Expensive

It may not look like the 2025 Honda Civic Much different than the 2022-2024 models that have been on U.S. roads since 2021, the model lineup has changed significantly, with half now powered by a hybrid powertrain.

Two of the four trim levels available for the Civic sedan and hatchback are now hybrid-only. How does this affect the costs of Honda’s popular compact, and more importantly, how much of a fuel economy boost does the new hybrid option deliver?

2025 Honda Civic Model Lineup

Previously, there were significant differences between the sedan and hatchback models in terms of available trim levels and equipment, but with the 2025 model, things have become much simpler.

The two body styles shared only the base LX and Sport trim levels, with the higher-level sedan versions known as the EX and Touring, and the hatchbacks as the EX-L and Sport Touring.

Although the LX and Sport grades are nearly identical and share a 2.0-liter I-4 engine, buyers can opt for a manual transmission for the Sport hatchback—the sedan and LX versions were only available with Honda's continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

There were minor differences between the EX sedan and EX-L hatchback; the latter added leather, hence the "L", and the Touring sedan and Sport Touring hatchback could be had with a manual transmission, while the four-door was automatic only.

All of these higher-level Civics share the same 1.5-liter turbocharged I-4 engine, which has been removed from the 2025 Civic lineup and essentially replaced by a new 2.0-liter electric I-4 option.

Upcoming 2025 Civic Models

The traditional 2025 Civic lineup will consist of four models: the LX sedan only, Sport, Sport Hybrid, and Sport Touring.

The 2025 model year changes do not yet affect the Civic Si sedan or Civic Type R hatchback.

LX and Sport models engine

The base LX and Sport models are powered by a new 2.0-liter I-4 engine and continuously variable transmission; output drops from 158 horsepower and 138 lb-ft of torque to 150 horsepower and 133 lb-ft, though power peaks occur in the rpm range.

Honda has discontinued the manual-transmission Civic Sport hatchback, and the hybrids don't offer a manual transmission, leaving the more popular Civic Si and Type R sport versions as the only standard Civics available.

2025 Civic Hybrid Engine

The Sport Hybrid and Sport Touring Hybrid models feature a hybrid configuration familiar to Honda fans.

It shares a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with the Honda Accord sedan and CR-V Hybrid, plus a large primary electric drive motor and a smaller starter generator; the larger engine provides most of the Civic's propulsion power, with the gasoline engine acting mostly as a generator.

At high speeds and under certain conditions of maximum acceleration, the gasoline engine can be held in a single-speed driving mode to assist the electric drive motor in turning the Civic's front tires.

The hybrid powertrain, which produces 200 horsepower and 232 lb-ft, outperforms the original 180-hp, 177-lb-ft turbocharged I-4 it replaces.

2025 Honda Civic has better fuel economy

Fuel efficiency improves across the board. The gasoline-only LX and Sport models get better fuel economy, with the LX sedan seeing a 1 mpg increase across the board to 32 mpg city, 41 mpg highway, and 36 mpg combined.

Additionally, Civic Sport Sedan models get 1 mpg city, 2 mpg highway, and 1 mpg combined, for a total of 31 mpg city, 39 mpg highway, and 34 mpg combined.

Civic Sport Consumption

Enjoy Civic Sport has lower stats than the LX due to its larger tires and other amenities. The Civic hatchback's fuel economy increases by 1 mpg city, 1 mpg highway, and 2 mpg combined, to 30, 38, and 34 mpg.

Previously, turbocharged Civics were generally more efficient than their 2.0-liter counterparts except for the 2024 Civic Touring; the hybrids are the same, but they outperform the LX and Sport by a much larger margin.

Civic Hybrid Efficiency

According to Honda's calculations, the sedan versionsHonda Civic Sport Hybrid The 2025 Sport Touring Hybrid gets 50 mpg city, 47 mpg highway, and 49 mpg combined, while the hatchback gets 50 mpg city and 45 mpg highway, resulting in a combined rating of 48 mpg.

Compared to Toyota Corolla

Toyota's Corolla Hybrid can achieve up to 53 mpg city, 46 mpg highway, and 50 mpg combined—though similarly equipped vehicles to this Civic get 50 mpg city, 43 mpg highway, and 47 mpg combined.

The Civic is much more powerful than the relatively weak Corolla, so it should be significantly faster, but the Toyota also has all-wheel drive, something the front-drive-only Honda lacks.
